Great Cruelties Have Been Reported: The 1544 Investigation of the Coronado Expedition
Published in Hardcover by Southern Methodist Univ Pr (April, 2002)
Authors: Richard Flint and Kay Cattarulla
Average review score:

A scholarly, detailed historical analysis
Great Cruelties Have Been Reported: The 1544 Investigation Of The Coronado Expedition by historian Richard Flint is a superbly presented, scholarly, detailed historical analysis of not just the Spanish Coronado Expedition into the New World, but also the official investigation by Spanish officials after the Coronado Expedition's two-year duration. Focusing on the primary sources of the extensive documents recording this official investigation, Great Cruelties Have Been Reported unflinchingly surveys and reports the clash between worlds and cultures, the Spanish conquistadors and the Native American peoples. Great Cruelties Have Been Reported is a solid, exhaustively researched, well reasoned, and smoothly written account which is strongly recommended for both academic and community library history collections.

Gringos in Mexico

A fabulous cross cultural reading experience
Edward Simmen, an English professor at the Universidad de las Americas-Puebla (in Mexico), edited this fantastic collection of short stories whose common thread is that of American authors writing about Mexican settings. The period covered by the stories ranges from 1850 to 1960 Mexico. If you are a Mexican or Latino reader trying to grasp how American writers have depicted Mexico through the years, or you are an American trying to figure out what to expect south of the border, this book is a must read. I had it at a seminar with Prof. Simmen himself, and I can hardly forget a more joyful and illuminating cross cultural reading experience... You will enjoy the trip, one way or the other.

The best posh guide to Mexico
There is no other guide better than EyeWitness when you are travelling. Perhaps if you are doing backpacking, it will not solve your need to know bus stops, schedules, taxi fares, etc. However, it offers plenty of cultural info, colourful diagrams, suggested walking trips, and offers a good historical and social background for what you are about to visit. In this case, being a Mexican, I feel Eyewitness offers a very good idea of the Mexican social and cultural environment, not only for first-time travelleres, but even to natives as I am.

Excellent Guide!
My fiancée and I bought this book before we moved to New Mexico in March of 2000. It has proven to be a fantastic guide and we believe that it's the only book you need to explore the state on foot. Well organized by area with great trail descriptions and maps. A wonderful book!

more than the other travel books to the area
all the travel books to this area cover the hotels and the ruins, but this book gives more than i have read in any of the others with regards to the animals, plant life, fish, make up of the reefs, ecological concerns, more insight into the native Mayans, more useful information. this is one of the three guide books i am taking with me. i believe it has been newly released as Yucatan Peninsula Handbook by Moon Publications, ISBN 1-56691-024-2

The Guns of Valverde
Published in Hardcover by Forge (07 July, 2000)
Author: P. G. Nagle
Average review score:

Guns of Valverde
As an avid student of the U. S. Civil War in the Southwest, and a frequent visitor to the battlefields and other skirmish sites in the "Territory of New Mexico," I found P G Nagle's work on Guns of Valverde just as riveting as her previous work entitled Glorieta Pass. Ms. Nagle has carefully researched her subject matter as shown by her attention to historical facts and then masterfully woven them into a story bringing this period of time to life. The fact that I'm so familiar with the factual information helped me enjoy both this latest of her works and the previous one tremendously. I was able to absorb more of the fictional account without having to stop to confirm or contest the factual elements. But whether or not the average reader is knowledgeable about the Civil War in New Mexico is unimportant since Ms. Nagle continues to impress me as a superb storyteller.

Ever since The Killer Angels by Shaara and Ulysses by Skimmin were written I have attempted to read more of these historical novels, finding the majority of them to be extremely well written, factual to my satisfaction, and entertaining. Guns of Valverde, like Glorieta Pass, definitely fit into this category. I look forward to Ms. Nagle's sequel entitled Galveston which, I understand, is a work in progress.

SIX STARS
THE SAGA BEGINS WITH SCHRODER GROWING UP ON THE MEXICO-CALIF. BORDER NEAR SAN DIEGO. RUSTLING, BANDITS. ALASKA: HE SPENT A WINTER SNOWED IN WITH JACK LONDON. THEN ON TO CHINA WHERE FROM THE 1880'S THROUGH 1917 THIS MAN WAS ON ONE LONG ADVENTURE. ITEMS: HIS INTEREST IN THE METEORITE THAT STRUCK SIBERIA AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY (1900) AND THE CURIOUS BEHAVIOR OF THE TIBETAN MONKS, LONG BEFORE METAPHYSICS BECAME FASHIONABLE. HIS CRITICISM OF ROY CHAPMAN ANDREWS. HE WORKED FOR THE AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. IN CHINA AND WENT EVERYWHERE WHEN IT WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DO SO. THE BOOK COVERS HIS LIFE FROM THE 1880'S THROUGH 1917 NO DOUBT A LOT MORE HAPPENED TO HIM THAN WAS IN THE BOOK, BECAUSE THE BOOK ONLY COVERED THOSE YEARS AND HE LIVED WELL INTO HIS NINETIES. HE DIED OF INJURIES FROM AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT. IF YOU LIKE TRUE NON-STOP ADVENTURE THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST.
